Daily Critter Facts, Cryptozoology

Bigfoot, aka Sasquatch, has been a prominent member of folklore for decades. Most people quickly dismiss the creature as mere legend. Is this creature an ape? A neanderthal? Is it something else? This article talks about it from both sides of the coin. Since none have ever been captured, it’s tough to say for sure if they even exist. You be the judge. This April 1st article is on special request from my friend, Kevin.

First the Stats…

Scientific name: Homo sapiens cognatus
Weight: Up to 300 lbs.
Height: Up to 7 feet
Lifespan: Unknown

Now on to the Facts!

1.) This large creature has been allegedly spotted in Western Canada and in the Northwestern parts of the United States.

2.) The Abominable Snowman, aka Yeti, is the Asian version/species.

3.) In 1976, Director Peter Byrne of the Bigfoot Information Center & Exhibition in The Dalles, Oregon found and gave to the FBI some hairs attached to a diminutive piece of skin.

4.) 4 decades passed and the FBI finally responded to Peter Byrne with the conclusion that the hairs found were nothing more than that of a species of deer. The FBI declassified the file.

5.) During the 1970s, Bigfoot was incredibly famous. If you’re old enough to remember, Bigfoot was even featured in the television series The Six Million Dollar Man.

But wait, there’s more on the Bigfoot!

6.) Roger Patterson and Robert Gimlin released their world famous film clip of Sasquatch in 1967.

7.) Bigfoot is typically described as a very large primate that walks erect, like humans.

Did you know…?
British explorer David Thompson is often given credit with the first discovery of a proposed set of Bigfoot prints, in 1811.

8.) They are known for giving off a foul smelling odor.

9.) High pitched screams have been reportedly heard as well.

10.) Ralph von Koenigswald, a German paleoanthropologist actually got credit for discovering an extremely large primate called Gigantopithecus, in Hong Kong. Since then hundreds of teeth and numerous jaws in China, India, and Vietnam have been found. However, nothing more has been discovered, so there is very little to go on with regards to more complete details of Gigantopithecus. Only the estimated weight has been hypothesized at up to 1,200 lbs!

But wait, there’s still more on the Bigfoot!

11.) Approximately 1/3rd of Bigfoot sightings are in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States.

12.) Most reports are considered hoaxes or mistakes, even by believers of Bigfoot.

Did you know…?
John Napier published his book “Bigfoot: The Yeti and Sasquatch in Myth and Reality” in 1973. In it he stated, “I am convinced that Sasquatch exists, … There must be something in north-west America that needs explaining, and that something leaves man-like footprints.”

13.) According to data collected from the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization’s Bigfoot sightings database in 2019, Washington has reported over 2,000 sightings, California has 1,600, Pennsylvania has registered over 1,300, New York & Oregon tie with over 1,000, and Texas has slightly over 800.

14.) They allegedly communicate via clacking rocks or logs; often called “wood knocking” and rock throwing. They also utilize vocalizations such as howls, grunts, moans, whistles, and even a type of language.

15.) Lodgepole pines and other small trees have been witnessed as being bent, uprooted, and even stacked in patterns like a weaved and crisscrossed style.

16.) What do you believe? Comment below.

Critterman

With over 50 years of critter experience to my credit and hundreds of zoology teaching hours to people around the world, I have amassed not only a continuing thirst for critter knowledge but a desire to teach others all I can about the majesty and wonder of our natural world. Critter Science is a culmination of such knowledge. I have hands on as well as book acquired intel on all kinds of critters. Whether they're on land, sea, or in the air. I will never say that I know everything about all animals. That's impossible, even for a savant. But, that being said, ask me any animal question and I'll answer it. If I don't know the answer, I'll get an answer for you!
